Reading

At Clarkson Infant and Nursery school, our aim is for all children to learn to read, love to read and read to learn.

Reading is fundamental to education. Proficiency in reading, writing and spoken language is vital for pupils’ success.”  The Reading Framework

In addition to this, children arrive at school with differing early life experiences and the only effective route to enabling all children to ‘level up’ is for them to be taught systematically to read as soon as they start school.  “In this way, they do not have to rely on adults to read to them. Children who become engaged in reading can make huge progress in their literacy development simply through their independent reading, whatever the nature of their early experiences.”

Books and stories are prioritised across the curriculum to reinforce the value of reading and for books as a tool for learning. We teach children to learn to read using the Read, Write Inc. programme.

The Read, Write Inc. teaching structure, routines and signals that are used throughout the school, lessen the cognitive load for children and place all focus on the new learning, which supports all children in making good progress in their learning.

The programme provides a systematic synthetic approach to teaching phoneme/grapheme correspondences, as well as blending and segmenting skills for reading and spelling through the daily ‘Speed Sounds’ lesson. Our children apply their secure knowledge and skills to read and re-read Read, Write Inc. storybooks, providing daily opportunities for progressive fluency to develop. In addition to the daily lesson, children will have other opportunities to reinforce their knowledge and skills through short afternoon sessions delivered by class teachers or using the Read, Write Inc. portal lessons.

Children in our Nursery are immersed in high quality Phase One activities and towards the end of their time in the Nursery, they may be introduced to the Read, Write Inc. picture cards if this is appropriate.
